As I travel the country meeting hairstylists it always leaves me in awe when someone says “you’re Only a hairstylist.”
What does that mean? Why do people say that? Why does being a hairstylist have any less worthiness than other professions? Why is being a hairstylist taboo in the eyes of so many people? Why do people say “you can’t make it in college just be a hairstylist?” Why do people say “you’re only a hairstylist you can’t really make a good living with that job?” Why is being a hairstylist viewed as mediocre? Why do people think less of a person because they are a hairstylist?
The first time I ran into someone telling me that I shouldn’t or couldn’t live my dream was in my tenth grade year in high school. I remember the guidance counselor telling me that I was wasting my brain and future if I became a “beautician.” (I was an honor student, and she thought I needed to be a doctor or lawyer). This was an ongoing conversation with her for two years.
I politely corrected her verbiage and said “I will be an amazing Cosmetologist. I promise I will not waste my brain.” Funny thing is that I am so glad I decided to be a part of the beauty industry. It has supported my family and brought joy to my life every day
I was not going to let this woman stop me from living my dream. I used this as a driving force to motivate me to take it to the next level. Thank God I didn’t listen to her.
If you are a parent, teacher or a person that has a judged someone based on the fact that they are “only a hairstylist” then I hope this blog will make you see it from a different perspective.
Being a hairstylist is one of the most amazing professions on the planet. Being a hairstylist takes a skill set that most people can never master. It means: being a good listener, really hearing what your clients want and delivering it. It means influencing people, making a difference in their life, it means putting a smile on someone’s face and letting them know and see how beautiful they really are. It means being able to know geometry and chemistry so that you can give your clients the best services possible. It means being able to adapt to different personalities every 45 minutes. It means being creative. It means standing on your feet for long hours in the same position every day. It means being able to envision what someone else wants when they can’t describe it. It means caring for others well-being. It means being the shoulder people cry on because no one else listens. It means showing love to people, complete strangers on a daily basis. It means bringing joy to people everyday. It means sharing in life’s most precious moments both good and bad. It means making people look and most of all feel beautiful everyday. Being a hairstylist is truly an amazing profession.
If you are one of these people that say “she/he is only a hairstylist” stop it. Take a moment and think about what you would look like, and feel like if you didn’t have an amazing hairstylist in your life. How many times have you said I can never do my hair like you? Please change the narrative and let your hairstylist know how much you love them.
If you are a hairstylist—hats off to you. You have an amazing future ahead of you. Do not give worthiness to other's negative statement or beliefs. You are worthy!!!!! Stop telling yourself that you can’t live the life that you want because you are only a hairstylist.
Smile, because guess what? You Are A Hairstylist! You are a difference maker everyday!!!! Love yourself ❤️❤️❤️
